Training/Event Description:

Presented at Together4Children, 2017 Strong Foundations Matter Symposium

This session explores how communities of practice are successful in supporting leadership development for child care center directors. Results from a rigorous 18-month evaluation study of four leadership academies conducted in two states will be presented and discussed. Using a mixed-methods design, this research explored and compared the programs’ characteristics, nature, and processes, as well as evaluated the impact these communities of practice had on program administrators as change agents. The study examined the effects of the Taking Charge of Change (TCC) model and analyzed change over time in administrative practices. Researchers also analyzed evidence on the use of job-embedded field assignments and mentor supports to refine leadership practices, acquire new competencies, gain insights, and become more confident and effective leaders in their communities. Discussion will focus on how communities of practice foster collegial support and networking—resulting in trusting relationships and an environment of critical inquiry where members share their passions and struggles with one another, co-construct knowledge, and reflect on assumptions and beliefs about their role as leaders.
